Chau Chak Wing Museum joins with Biennale of Sydney
The Chau Chak Wing Museum at the University of Sydney is one of six host locations of next year's Biennale of Sydney. The Biennale of Sydney is a free public art festival and the largest contemporary art event of its kind in Australia. Marking its 50th anniversary in 2023, the 24th edition of the Biennale, Ten Thousand Suns, opens on 9 March 2024. Artistic directors Cosmin Costinas and Inti Guerrero said the Biennale will examine 'collective possibilities around a future that is not only possible, but necessary to be lived in joy and plenitude'. The Chau Chak Wing Museum will host works by a range of international artists, including Mangala Bai Maravi from India's Baiga tribe, and the late Chinese-American painter Martin Wong. The museum opened in 2020 , bringing the University of Sydney's extensive antiquities, natural history, historic photographs, cultural artefacts and art collections under one roof for the first time in the University's 173-year history. Its current exhibition program encompasses Pacific history , contemporary Indigenous work, and historic and contemporary photography. "Through my previous work with the Biennale, I know it engages with the themes of our time," said Michael Dagostino, the University's Director of Museums and Cultural Engagement.
