Understanding plastic semiconductors better
Understanding plastic semiconductors better
Semiconductors made from polymer materials are becoming increasingly important for the electronics industry - as a basis for transistors, solar cells or LEDs - showing important advantages when compared to conventional materials: they are lightweight, flexible and very cheap to produce. Usually, they consist of more than one substance as they get their particular electric properties only when several materials are blended.

Liverpool, UK - 19 July 2010: Scientists at the University of Liverpool have constructed molecular `knots¿ with dimensions of around two nanometers (2 x 10-9 nm) ¿ around 30,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Most molecules are held together by chemical bonds between atoms - 'nano-knots' are instead mechanically bonded by interpenetrating loops.

Protons - smaller than we thought
Protons – smaller than we thought
The proton - one of the smallest building-blocks of all matter - is even smaller than had previously been assumed. This discovery is the result of experiments carried out at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Villigen, Switzerland, by an international research team. As a consequence of this discovery, a correction will have to be made to either the quantum theory of how light and matter interact or to the value of the Rydberg Constant - i.e. an important change is needed to either the most precise theory in physics or the most precisely determined physical constant.
