Named after Dr Peter Bowman (1956-2020), the Bowman Scholarships aim to widen access to higher education for UK-based students from forced migration backgrounds.
The UCL Centre for Languages & International Education (CLIE) has paid tribute to a highly-regarded colleague by naming a new scholarship after him.
The Bowman Scholarships honour the legacy of Dr Peter Bowman, Chemistry Lecturer, Coordinator and Admissions Tutor for the Undergraduate Preparatory Certificates (UPC), who sadly passed away in April 2020. He had been undergoing chemotherapy treatment for an advanced stage of cancer when he tragically contracted the coronavirus.
Peter is much missed as a colleague and lecturer, who worked with international students throughout his 15-year career at UCL. He represented CLIE around the world on many admissions trips, inspiring the young international scholars he met to pursue their education at UCL.
The scheme aims to support UK-based students from forced migration backgrounds to enter university, especially those whose studies have been interrupted due to their immigration status and who do not have the financial means to access a university preparatory course.
Scholarship holders will receive a full tuition fee waiver for the UPC, which following completion, gives them a qualification to enrol on an undergraduate degree at UCL or other top UK universities. They will also receive specific signposting and support throughout their academic year and UCAS application.
These scholarships reflect the academic ambition and the international vision of the UPC which Peter was an accomplished advocate for. Throughout his career, he counselled on many of its key policies to maintain rigorous standards as well as adapt to the changing global world.
CLIE Director, Dr Christine Hoffmann, said:
"I’m delighted that we can pay tribute to Peter by naming a new scholarship after him. He was an outstanding scientist, teacher and educator, colleague and friend. He made a difference in every area of CLIE and UCL in which he was involved. His support to me in my role as Director was invaluable and I miss his thoughtful, unassuming and intelligent approach."
