Columbia College Senior Receives Prestigious British Scholarship

Columbia undergraduate Shlomo Bolts (CC'10) has been awarded a 2010 Gates Cambridge Scholarship, a selective award that gives students from around the world a chance to pursue graduate studies at Cambridge University in England. "The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is a tremendous opportunity for me to further my research on globalization and conflict resolution," Bolts said. "But I also see the scholarship as a testament to the extraordinary students and faculty at Columbia, from whom I learned so much both in and out of the classroom. I hope that this award will improve my capacity to contribute toward a more just and peaceful world." Bolts is a leader in a number of campus organizations including the Progressive Jewish Alliance and Columbia's Amnesty International chapter. He also co-founded Common Ground, a Jewish-Muslim dialogue group on campus. Last summer he received a research grant from Columbia's Institute for Religion, Culture, and Public Life to study religious tolerance. He intends to pursue a career in diplomacy and conflict resolution.
