Professor Joyeeta Gupta (photo: Jeroen Oerlemans) - Joyeeta Gupta receives ¤2.5 million for research into climate change and the fossil fuel industry 22 April 2021 To combat global warming, we have to stop using fossil fuels. This will have a major impact on both investors in related industries who will have to write off trillions of dollars and developing countries that had hoped to use the fossil fuel industry to drive economic growth. Professor Joyeeta Gupta has received an Advanced Grant worth ¤2.5 million from the European Research Council to look into the roles of the various different stakeholders and develop tools to help them all move towards climate-resilient change and inclusive development. Fossil fuels will have to remain underground for global warming and accompanying climate change to be tamed. According to research, if we wish to achieve a max. of 2°C warming, 80% of the coal, 50% of the gas and 33% of the oil currently underground will have to stay there. And those numbers are considerably higher with a target of max.
