Durham University receives donation to provide scholarship for County Durham residents. July 2018) Durham University has received a generous gift to set up a scholarship fund for prospective students living in County Durham. The Brian Cooper Scholarship Fund will provide an annual scholarship to a local student in need of financial assistance. Donors Claire Pringle and her husband Tony have worked closely with the University to set up the scholarships in memory of Brian Cooper - father of Claire and her brother Noel. The scholarships may contribute to living costs, tuition fees or other associated costs of study. In memory of a local man Claire's father, Brian Cooper, was born in Horden in 1938 to a family of coal miners. After leaving school at 15, he started working at Horden colliery, fixing mining machinery and went to night school to gain qualifications in mining engineering.
