ANU-led research that's increased the targeting and efficiency of oil exploration has won a major European research prize. Professor Mark Knackstedt ? head of the Department of Applied Mathematics at ANU ? is joint winner of the New Frontiers of Hydrocarbons Prize , given annually by the Italian resource company ENI and valued at ?300,000. The ENI awards are designed to encourage a better use of energy sources, promote environmental research and shine the spotlight on new generations of researchers. Professor Knackstedt travelled to Rome this month to collect the prize. During his visit he was invited to speak at the world's oldest science academy. Founed in 1603, Accademia dei Lincei counted Galileo among its earliest members. Professor Knackstedt is Chief Technology Officer for Digitalcore, a company based in Canberra which grew out of the collaboration of researchers at ANU and the University of New South Wales.
