Four minute mile to be challenged again at Rawlinson Track
The University of Melbourne will host the historic Victorian Mile Championships tomorrow, fifty years since former Olympian Merv Lincoln broke the four minute mile in the event on the same track. The Rawlinson Track last hosted the Championships at the 1957 meet where Lincoln made history. The event, the fourth in the 2011 Victorian Milers Club Series, will feature more than 200 athletes and 20 Melbourne University Athletics Club Members running for the top prize. Hamish Beaumont, Secretary of the Melbourne University Athletics Club (MUAC), says there will be a number of significant spectators on Thursday night. 'Frank Henegan will be a name familiar to many. A MUAC life member, he was one of Lincoln's pace makers, along with multiple world record holder Ron Clarke, in the 1957 race.' 'And Tim Lincoln, Merv Lincoln's son, will also attend and present the medals to the winners of the 2011 Victorian Mile Championships.' 'The four minute barrier is still a formidable one for athletes more than fifty years after it was first broken, and we're all looking forward to a competitive race run at a strong pace.' The race kicks off Thursday, 17th of February from 7:15pm. Entry to the Rawlinson Track is free and all spectators are welcome to attend the running of both the mile and 800m races.
