From Shakespeare Street to Jubilee - a century of adult education

The University of Nottingham is to celebrate its huge contribution to life-long learning of thousands of students from across the East Midlands and beyond with a special exhibition at its Adult Education Centre in Shakespeare Street. For almost a century, the Centre has provided part-time and flexible courses for students of all ages and will now be joining the University's School of Education on the multi-award winning Jubilee campus. The exhibition marks the end of a two-year phased relocation of Adult Education to Jubilee, with the provision and flexibility of courses being maintained and further brand new community 'Workshops @ Jubilee' starting this autumn. The free public exhibition, 'Celebrating a century of Adult Education', opens at 14-22 Shakespeare Street on Thursday July 1st when visitors will be able to take a journey through time, following the Centre's fascinating history. Acquired by University College, as the University was called then, in 1922, the Palladian-style premises was transformed and extended over the years so that by1952 the Centre was managing a regional programme of extra-mural courses for a wide range of mature students. Over half a century later, The School of Education which administers the Centre now, offers a range of courses all leading to a formal qualification. These include part-time undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Humanities, Creative and Professional Writing, Fine Art and Counselling Practice and Local and Regional History as well as teacher training.
