How calcium ions control muscle power

30. Bern - SNF The penetration of calcium ions, which cause muscle cells to contract, is visible under a TIRF microscope. This innovative microscope, funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF), sheds unique light on what sets healthy muscles apart from diseased ones. Under the TIRF microscope what goes on in healthy and diseased muscle cells appears in an unprecedented new light. On the left: a human muscle cell. Centre: the contact points between the muscle cell and the glass slide. On the right: activated muscle cell under the TIRF microscope.
