Why declare your disability or health condition?
By informing us about your disability or long-term health condition, we can help you receive the practical support and appropriate Reasonable Adjustments you are entitled to. Additionally, your safety in the event of an emergency is paramount, and for some mobility disabilities and other conditions, a Personal Emergency Evacuation Plan (PEEP) is essential.Receiving practical support and Reasonable Adjustments
Reasonable Adjustments
Reasonable Adjustments can take a wide range of forms depending on your specific circumstances, these can include adjustments for:- lectures, seminars and teaching events;
- your assessments; and your ongoing health and wellbeing.
You can find more detailed information about the types of support available for different circumstances on the Student Support and Wellbeing website.
How to set up a Summary of Reasonable Adjustments (SoRA).
You can contact our Student Support and Wellbeing (SSW) team at any time to arrange an appointment to discuss any issues that may be affecting your ability to study, talk about types of support that are available, and to set up a SoRA to help you.Personal Emergency Evacuation Plans (PEEP)
A PEEP is used to provide an assessment for planning emergency evacuation from UCL premises for people with a disability or health condition in case of emergency evacuation of a building.How to request a PEEP?
As a student, you can request a PEEP in several ways:- Applicant Support Questionnaire: When filling out your applicant questionnaire, indicate that you have challenges or barriers leaving a room safely.
- Department Referral: Request a referral through your department.
- Student Support and Wellbeing Services: During an appointment, our teams may observe and assess the need for a PEEP based on their judgment.
Remember, a PEEP should be reviewed annually or whenever there is a change in circumstances that impacts your requirements.
Prioritising access to Reasonable Adjustments
We have recently improved the way our estates teams manage building works related to reasonable adjustments to ensure that they are prioritised and responded to quickly, and to ensure our inclusive environments team have the opportunity to review and support them. We’re also developing a proposed action plan for improving the way building related Reasonable Adjustment requests for both staff and students are met at UCL.Read more about our work towards improving access to Reasonable Adjustments.
Recent improvements to the PEEP process
We have also been working on improvements to the PEEP process including simplifying the PEEP Form to make it easier to complete without compromising the vital information needed to ensure personal safety during an evacuation, and using more inclusive language in the form to ensure it is accessible and equitable for everyone.We’ve also developed new training and updated our guidance for staff, and we’re currently looking into how we can further improve the PEEP process in more complex cases, such as such when students are in multiple rooms and buildings for their modules.
