Human remains, thought to be medieval, found in Durham Remains of four human skulls, together with other human remains, suspected to be from medieval times, have been found at a site near Durham University's Palace Green Library. A team of archaeologists and contractors made the discovery while carrying out work for phase two of the development of the Library, which this summer was home to the acclaimed Lindisfarne Gospels exhibition. The development work has now been halted to obtain the necessary legal permission from the Government's Ministry of Justice to carry out an archaeological excavation.  Archaeologists intend to investigate the area further before taking the bones away for further examination and then, by law, they must be reinterred at an approved burial ground.
