Sirtex Chair, Ross Stephens.
Research into localised cancer treatment will be the focus of a new industry sponsored Chair announced today at The Australian National University (ANU). The Sirtex Chair will be held by Professor Ross Stephens from the Department of Applied Mathematics and is funded by Sydney-based global life-sciences business, Sirtex Medical Limited which makes and sells an Australian-developed targeted radiation therapy for patients with inoperable liver cancer. The funding will enable ANU researchers to focus on biomedical technology for applications in infectious disease and liver cancer. The research will be conducted at the Department of Applied Mathematics, led by Professor Stephens and Professor Tim Senden, Head of the Department. Sirtex has made a commitment to sponsor the Chair for a total of up to three million dollars over three years. ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Young AO, welcomed the establishment of the Chair.
