‘Is Afghanistan a Just War ’

The first Sir Michael Quinlan Memorial Lecture was held at the Edmond J. Safra Lecture Theatre at the Strand Campus last night (24 March). The event was hosted by the Department of War Studies and the Council on Christian Approaches to Defence & Disarmament. The lecture addressed the notion 'Is Afghanistan a Just War?' and was chaired by The Rt Revd and Rt Hon. The Lord Harries of Pentregarth. Lord Guthrie of Craigiebank, former Chief of the Defence Staff between 1997 and 2001 spoke for the notion. Lord Guthrie co-wrote, with Sir Michael Quinlan, in 2007. He used the concepts in this thesis to examine whether the war in Afghanistan could be described as 'just' through every phase of the conflict.
