A £ 2.2m Research Programme is announced
05 Sep 2013 A £ 2.2m Research Programme led by University of Manchester researchers is to investigate if Brazil's recipe for success can be replicated in sub-Saharan Africa. Running from 2013 to 2016, it is directed by Dr Ed Amann from the School of Social sciences and Professor Armando Barrientos, from The Brooks World Poverty Institute, both based at the University. Professor Barrientos said: "Brazil has emerged as a globally significant economic power in the last decade. "There is considerable interest among researchers, policymakers and investors in the policies enabling Brazil to combine growth with falling poverty and inequality - nowhere more so than among the emerging economies in Africa. "Yet, outside Brazil, far too little is understood about an economy which is increasingly shaping the world around it. "So this innovative research programme examines the lessons for Africa emerging from Brazil development. The first phase of the study will investigate the nature and sources of Brazil's growth performance, supporting cutting-edge research from leading experts on the Brazilian economy.
