LU unveils cutting edge Internet ventures
Lund University has premiered two brand new research institutes within a week of one another, in a major boost to what is already a vibrant technology and innovation hub. Together with Sony Mobile, the university inaugurated its cloud research centre yesterday, focused on distributed cloud technology: - Today’s cloud is in faraway server halls. The cloud of tomorrow will be all around us, said Björn Ekelund, the acting director for The Mobile and Pervasive Computing Institute at Lund University (MAPCI). It will serve as an important bridge between research and industry, as part of the existing mobile cluster Mobile Heights that already represents over 7,000 professionals in the area. The grand opening of Lund University Internet Institute , headquartered at the scenic Castle of Landskrona, took place last week. Harvard professor Lawrence Lessig helped welcome what will be a unique platform for multidisciplinary research on digitalisation. Together with the Swedish Institute, LUii have created a one-year scholarship programme called Social Innovation in a Digital Context (SIDC) , for social and digital innovators from the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The institute will also be involved in the Master’s programme in Sociology of European Law (SELA) at Lund University.
