May evenings at the Fitz

This month, the Fitzwilliam Museum is hosting two special evening events - a late opening offering entertainment for all ages, and an exclusive lecture by the Director of the British Museum. Taking its cue from the Fitzwilliam's major summer exhibition - Maggi Hambling: The Wave - this free late opening with a marine theme has something for everyone, not least the chance to enjoy a late-night view of this atmospheric exhibition of seascapes by one of Britain's most distinguished contemporary artists, Maggi Hambling. Visitors can also listen to music and relax with a drink in the Courtyard, or view a painting demonstration by renowned Chinese artist Chen Hong and watch him create an aquatic world in the galleries. For families, there's a range of activities on offer - children can get hand-ons and make a marine mobile, or try a museum trail focusing on the myths behind the sea gods and nymphs in the collection. In addition, younger visitors can try out the Museum's new 'Fish Kit' activity box in the galleries. The Museum is also hosting 'Objects of History' (Wednesday, May 19, 18:00-20:00) - an exclusive lecture by Neil MacGregor, Director of the British Museum and presenter of the BBC Radio 4's A History of the World in 100 Objects. This lecture, which takes place in Gallery 3 of the Museum, is in association with A History of the World, a unique partnership between the BBC, the British Museum and museums around the UK.
