Miners and Maggie on the agenda at annual Festival of Social Science

From discussions on the 1984 miners' strike and Margaret Thatcher to how public sector employees could spark a 'revolution' are just some of the hot topics in the spotlight at this year's Festival of Social Science. The University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University have once again teamed up for the annual national Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) festival, between 2 - 9 November 2013. This year promises to be the biggest and best yet with 33 events planned across the city - the biggest programme in the country. Members of the public, schoolchildren and professionals are invited to debates, exhibitions, workshops and plays as part of the week-long event to showcase social science research. On 7 November the University of Sheffield will host The Miners' Strike After 30 Years where members of the public will be invited to discuss next year's anniversary of the bitter strike of 1984-85. Hosted by Dr Cormac Behan, from the University's School of Law, the event will look at how the strike should be commemorated. Sheffield Hallam University's Psychology, Sociology and Politics (PSP) Department is urging public-sector and voluntary workers to attend its Everyday Revolutionaries event on November 6 so they can put forward their views on whether they feel empowered or demoralised under the current coalition Government.
