As part of the Bicentennial Physical Legacy Works project, starting on Monday, 5 May 2025, UCL contractor Neilcott will begin the process of removing and reinstalling the paving in the Quad’s new layout.
The project focuses on the perimeter of the Quad and will commence from the side of the Chadwick building that faces the Quad. These paving works are estimated to be completed by the end of July 2025.
The works will progress through nine phases from May to July, with alternative routes planned to ensure access throughout the works. This phased approach ensures that the work is carried out efficiently and with minimal disruption. For detailed information on the sequence and affected areas, please refer to the Construction and Timeline webpage.
How it might impact you:
Throughout the duration of the works, access to the Quad and nearby buildings will be maintained, however, routes will need to be slightly altered to accommodate the paving activities. Should any temporary closures need to take place, these will be shared on the Construction and Timeline webpage , which will also contain information on all’alternative routes throughout the works period. Frequent building users will continue to receive direct communications regarding project updates.During the works, fire routes will remain accessible. However, they will experience changes in width to ensure safety and compliance, and some of the paths will be narrower than usual. Emergency lighting will remain installed on all temporary fencing to ensure health and safety.
We recommend that during this period of paving works, that you consider whether you can access the building you require via an alternative route that avoids the Quad, such as through the Gordon Street or Malet Place entrances. The cloisters will remain closed for access during this time.
If you require additional support:
We are looking at providing additional onsite assistance to be available to help any of our community that require it to navigate the temporary changes. If you’re joining activities/events or have classes in central areas:
Please take the access changes into account when you plan your journey. This can include using the Gordon Street or Malet Place entrances to access certain parts of the Wilkins Building to avoid possible disruptions. As we approach our bicentenary in 2026, UCL Estates remains committed to innovating our Quad and central spaces for a better campus experience for all.
