Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute Director Robert Wells.
An improved primary health care system and policy in Australia will be one of the outcomes of a partnership between the Australian Primary Health Care Research Institute, based at The Australian National University (ANU), and the Australian Association of Academic Primary Care (AAAPC). This partnership will support the development and continuation of Practice Based Research Networks (PBRNs) by establishing a national secretariat. These PBRNs will be devoted principally to the primary care of patients and will focus on investigating the questions related to community-based practice in order to improve the quality of primary health care available to the Australian public. General Practices that choose to take part in this scheme will engage with university researchers, consumers and community organisations to provide a more rounded view of the needs and expectations of health consumers. Under the Institute's Director Robert Wells, the networks will support research that is related to the national reform agenda and will engage with new structures such as Medicare Locals and Local Health and Hospital Networks to improve access and quality of care for health consumers. Up to $50,000 per annum over a two year period will be allocated to sustain a network of PBRNs Australia-wide. The partnership will also give the Institute further opportunity to continue its current studies in its many research programs, including chronic illness management and the evaluation of nursing care in Australia.
