Offer your prayers to a new exhibition
A new exhibition launching at the Lakeside Arts Centre in June needs the prayers of religious leaders and representatives of faith groups in Nottingham for a sound installation examining belief and community. Artist James Webb collects recordings of the prayers of people in the cities he exhibits in, investigating how belief creates community and how communities examine cities. "Religion is a powerful factor in our history, present and future, and it is important that we understand it and learn about all the faiths and cultures that are around us," said James. "If the faith has an established tradition — no matter how small — and it is practiced in the Nottingham area, then I would very much like it to be represented in the exhibition. I look to include all faiths: from Christianity to Jainism, Islam to African traditional practices, plus Wicca, Buddhism, Theosophy and Rastafarianism. I want the lot." Prayers will be recorded by the artist, then presented playing out of 12 floor speakers in the installation. Each speaker has a different prayer, looping to create unique combinations of all the prayers recorded.
