Phonetics Grant Success

Barry Heselwood (School of Modern Languages, Linguistics and Phonetics) has been successful in the Arts and Humanities Research Council Research Networks scheme. Along with Paul Foulkes (University of York) Heselwood has been awarded over £27,000 to coordinate a series of workshops and collaborative projects under the header "A multi-methodological approach to the instrumental phonetic and perceptual study of rhotic sounds in varieties of English". The activities will bring together specialists on the articulation, acoustics, perception and sociolinguistic significance of r-sounds in English, from across the UK and beyond. The research network will be active for 2 years, starting in October 2011. Other network members from the University of Leeds include Leendert Plug and Paul Carter (School of Modern Languages, Linguistics and Phonetics), Nick Thyer (School of Healthcare, Audiology), Denis McKeown (Institute of Psychological Sciences, Perception and Performance Action) and Ekaterini Klepousniotou (Institute of Psychological Sciences, Language and Cognitive Neuroscience).
