Pride Month takes place in June - a month-long celebration and acknowledgement of LGBTQ+ communities and culture. It’s a chance to come together in joy and friendship, whilst acknowledging that there is still much work to do to achieve equity and inclusion here in the UK and across the world.
The first Pride march in the UK was held back in 1972, to commemorate the uprising at the Stonewall Inn in New York on 28 June 1969 (the so-called ’Stonewall riots’) when the New York Police Department targeted the LGBTQ+ clientele of the club. This was nothing new - raids on LGBTQ+ bars and venues were common, as part of a pattern of homophobic harassment on the part of the NYPD who were enforcing existing ’vice laws’. But on this night, the patrons of the bar fought back. Many resisted arrest, and the resulting demonstrations went on for several nights, attracting thousands of participants.
Although the Stonewall uprising was by no means the first protest calling for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people, the sheer scale of the demonstrations meant that they were, and are, seen as a pivotal moment in LGBTQ+ history, inspiring thousands across the world to this day to fight for visibility, equality and liberation.
