Rector Rik Van de Walle and vice rector Mieke Van Herreweghe are joining the Belgian Royal House on their official state visit to Canada from March 11th to March the 17th.
At the invitation of Canada’s Governor General, Julie Payette, King Filip and Queen Mathilde will undertake a state visit to Canada. A Ghent University delegation led by rector Rik Van de Walle and vice rector Mieke Van Herreweghe will be accompanying the Belgian Royal House from the 11th of March to the 17th of March.
On Tuesday March 13th, His Majesty the King gives the opening speech at the symposium Assessing Immersion and Content and Language Integrated Learning: Linguistic, cognitive and educational perspectives. Prof. Wouter Duyck will adress the topic of cognitive effects of multilingualism in general, and more specifically immersion education.
During the visit, the Ghent University delegation will be holding three seminars.
Could cereals feed the world?
On Tuesday March 13th, the University of Ottawa will be hosting a workshop entitled Could cereals feed the world: Future perspectives in cereal research. This workshop is organised by Prof. Geert Hassaert and Prof. Mia Eeckhout (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering) together with their Canadian colleagues.
During the workshop, current themes in bioscience engineering, e.g. plant breeding, and the quality and processing of grains, will be addressed. Other topics include resource use efficiency, the development of metabolic and spectral sensors for plant breeding, new insights into grain quality parameters, bioresources, climate change, and biotechnology. All of these issues will be linked to the much larger-scale Canadian farms.
Multilingualism in education
On Wednesday March 14 th a seminar on multilingualism in relation to migration and education will be organised by all participating Belgian universities and their Canadian colleagues at the Ontario Institute for Education (University of Toronto).
Prof. Piet Van Avermaet and Prof. Stef Slembrouck (Faculty of Arts and Philosophy) will be sharing their expertise on multilingualism during a workshop entitled Social (inequality) aspects and sociolinguistic aspects of multilingualism in education repertoires in schools and classrooms.
Resource recovery
On Thursday March 15 th , Prof. Eveline Volcke and Prof. Ingmar Nopens (Faculty of Bioscience Engineering) are hosting a Belgium-Canada bilateral workshop at McGill University, Montreal on Water Resource Recovery, during which researchers from both countries will present talks about important advances and initiatives relating to resource recovery projects and possible strategic bilateral collaborations.
