Ali Zumla has been awarded the Pascoal Mocumbi Prize Sir Ali Zumla ( left ), credit UCLH. With members of the EDCTP Scientific Advisory Committee ( right ) , credt: EDCTP - Professor Sir Alimuddin (Ali) Zumla (UCL Infection & Immunity) has been awarded the prestigious EU-EDCTP Pascoal Mocumbi Prize, recognising his outstanding achievements in advancing health research and capacity development in Africa. Sir Ali's research, training and advocacy work over 30 years has led to breakthroughs in tuberculosis, TB/HIV co-infections and infectious diseases with epidemic potential, as well improvements in the health of disadvantaged populations. This week (October 18), Sir Ali was recognised by the EDCTP (European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials partnership) at ceremony officiated by the President of Mozembique, His Excellency Filipe Nyusi. In announcing the Prize, the EDCTP paid tribute to Sir Ali's 'outstanding scientific research, health services capacity building, training and advocacy achievements in Africa', which has had a significant impact on the wellbeing of the African population. Commenting Sir Ali said: "Prizes do not reflect individual efforts alone. I would like to dedicate this honour to my family, staff, teams, friends and colleagues from across the world who I have had the privilege to work with on a range of research, capacity development, advocacy and charity activities focussed on improving infectious diseases health services, and the lives of poor and disadvantaged populations worldwide." Sir Ali has set up and driven forward numerous international initiatives to tackle poverty-related and infectious diseases in Africa and beyond.
