Scientific excellence recognised with awards

21 January 2014 - The early-career achievements of three University of Sydney academics, conducting research in veterinary science, geoscience and chemistry, have been recognised with prestigious awards from the Australian Academy of Science. The annual awards are given for scientific excellence in diverse fields of science. The awards are presented to both outstanding early-career researchers under the age of 40 and to career researchers for life-long achievements. "These awards celebrate both career-long contributions by some of Australia's most distinguished researchers and remarkable discoveries made by younger investigators," said Academy President, Professor Suzanne Cory. "Each recipient is an outstanding scientist. On behalf of the Academy I warmly congratulate each of these individuals on their remarkable achievements in science." The University of Sydney early-career researchers honoured at this year's awards are: Professor Katherine Belov , Head of the Australasian Wildlife Genomics Group in the Faculty of Veterinary Science , received the Fenner Medal for research in biology. Dr Maria Seton , from the School of Geosciences , received the Dorothy Hill Award for female researchers in the earth sciences.
