Crucible being built (copyright Colin George)
An afternoon of in-depth interviews giving an insight into the workings of Sheffield´s theatres past and present, will take place at the Lyceum Theatre this week (7 May 2010). Sheffield: Theatre City is the fifth event from the Theatre Archive Project a joint initiative between the University of Sheffield and the British Library. Guest speakers will include Colin George, the founding artistic director of the Crucible who also directed the very popular The Stirrings in Sheffield on Saturday Night. He will be joined by the current artistic director of Sheffield Theatres, Daniel Evans. Long-time theatregoers in the city, who have been interviewed for the Theatre Archive Project, will also share their memories of going to the theatre in Sheffield in the 1940s, 50s and 60s, including the old Playhouse, the Lyceum, Attercliffe Palace and Empire Theatre. Following the interviews, the guest speakers will also take part in a panel discussion which will include Jamie Andrews, Head of Modern Literary Manuscripts at the British Library and Professor Dominic Shellard, Project Leader for the Theatre Archive Project, Chair of Sheffield Theatres Trust and Pro-Vice-Chancellor for External Affairs at the University of Sheffield. The Theatre Archive Project is now in its 7th year and is creating a unique oral history of British theatre 1945-1968, from the perspectives of both the theatregoer and the practitioner.
