Step back in time

The University of Nottingham Museum travels into the past this weekend for the annual Festival of British Archaeology. Step back 2,000 years and explore the everyday life of Margidunum — a Roman settlement that centred on what is now the A46 roundabout near Bingham, Nottinghamshire. The Museum is joining forces with Nottinghamshire County Archaeologists to hold the event, which will include activities around Roman hairstyles and fashion, jewellery, coins, food, games and mosaics. Visitors will also have the opportunity to handle objects excavated at Margidunum, which now have their home in the Museum's extensive collections. Museum Curator Clare Pickersgill said: "So much of popular history refers to the big events — wars, alliances, kings and invasions. But by looking at the way people lived their day-to-day lives, from where they did their shopping to how they did their hair, we can get a real understanding of how people lived thousands of years ago." This free event — 'Everyday life in Roman Margidunum' — takes place on Saturday July 24 at The University of Nottingham Museum on University Park, Nottingham, from 10.30am to 4pm.
