Recent developments - in particular, the end of USAID funding and substantial cuts to research and development cooperation - are placing increasing constraints on global health. There is a real risk of reversing the progress achieved since the turn of the millennium. More than ever, our mission stands true: to improve the health and well-being of people around the globe.
In 2024, nearly 1,000 staff and students from 96 nations worked tirelessly on more than 400 projects in 126 countries. Together with our partners, we achieved important milestones in innovation, validation and application - deepening our understanding of diseases, advancing the development of new treatments, improving patient care and addressing pressing public health issues.
The report offers a glimpse into our long-standing work and expertise in research, education and services, and introduces the people behind the science. We also present our new strategy 2025-2028, with a major focus on climate change and its impact on health. In our strategic interview, we spoke with Martina Hirayama, State Secretary for Education, Research and Innovation, about the various challenges research faces - from disinformation to funding pressures.
Thanks to the collective efforts, commitment and expertise of our students, staff and partners these achievements were possible, and together we will face the challenges ahead to continue improving people’s health around the world.
