The ’Genius’ of Thuringia - New Research on Meister Eckhart (ca. 1260-1328)

With his sermons he achieved a strong effect on his contemporaries and still impresses posterity today. It is also known that Eckhart, after long years in the service of the order, was accused of heresy in a papal inquisition trial in the last years of his life and that he died before the trial was concluded in 1328. In his lecture at the TU Ilmenau Citizens' Campus, Dietmar Mieth, professor emeritus of theology at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, traces important aspects of Meister Eckhart's life and theology in light of recent research. He reports how Eckhart worked as a Dominican friar, as a preacher and as a "living master" on itinerant paths in Europe.
