Two Sussex Professors made Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences
Two Sussex Professors made Academicians of the Academy of Social Sciences. The Academy of Social Sciences is to confer Keith Lewin, Professor of Education, and Ann Whitehead, Emeritus Professor of Social Anthropology, with the award of Academician. The two Sussex faculty are among 35 new Academicians "who have made a distinguished contribution to the social sciences". They join Sussex professors Richard Black (Human Geography), Mick Dunford (Economic Geography), Andy Field (Psychology), Valerie Hey (Education), Louise Morley (Education), and Paul Webb (Politics) as members of the organisation, which was established in 1999 to promote excellence in, and encourage the advancement of, the social sciences in the UK. Emeritus professors Bob Benewick (Politics), David Dyker (Economics), Jennifer Platt (Sociology), Jim Rollo (Law) and Jennifer Temkin (Law) are also Academicians. The Academy is composed of over 800 individual Academicians and 44 Learned Societies including most of the Learned Societies in the social sciences in the UK. The award is given by a committee of academic peers for contributions to the social sciences in the areas of thought leadership, practitioner applications or policy development.
