The University of Sydney's involvement in the 2010 Shanghai World Expo begins in earnest on Monday (28 June) with a symposium looking at the emerging technology of spintronics. Sydney is the only university to be involved as a gold sponsor of the Australian Pavilion at the Expo, where it will stage a series of forums that bring together leading Australian and Chinese academics. "We are extremely proud to be a partner with the Australian government in this significant venture," said Vice-Chancellor Dr Michael Spence. "China is and will continue to be of great importance to our university, and the World Expo will be a particularly strong platform for us to demonstrate our quality education and research, our China expertise and our longstanding commitment to the relationship," said Dr Spence. "Our presence at the World Expo will allow us to showcase Australia and the University of Sydney to a wide range of Chinese and international leaders and opinion-makers through a series of high level academic forums and events." The University has more than 50 research and teaching agreements with top Chinese universities, and was recently ranked fifth in the world for scientific research collaborations with China in the Thomson Reuters Global Research Report. The spintronics symposium will be chaired by Professor Simon Ringer, Director of the University's Australian Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis and one of Australia's leading spintronics researchers. It will also involve world-leading Chinese researchers from Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai.
