The Department of Art and Media at Aalto University is seeking

University teacher for our Visual Communication Design major

The position is a fixed term substitution, starting ideally on August 17th, 2026, and lasting until June 13th, 2027.

Your role

As a university teacher, you will teach Visual Communication Design (VCD) majors in the bachelor (BA) and master (MA) programmes in Art and Media, focusing especially on typography, typeface design and publication design. You will work as part of the VCD teaching team, delivering courses, tutoring students, contributing to ongoing curriculum development, and supervising theses and study projects. The role also includes evaluation tasks, participation in student admissions activities, and administrative tasks.

Co-teaching and co-learning are central in the programme, so you should enjoy working collaboratively with other teachers in planning and delivering courses and projects. You are expected to be able to teach both in-person and online, using contemporary methods to create teaching and learning environments.

Your experience

We are looking for a practicing designer with experience in teaching or assisting in higher education, and a master’s degree in a relevant field. Your teaching is grounded in practice-based knowledge of visual communication, and you keep up to date with the field.

Ideally, you have an art/design portfolio demonstrating professional skills in visual communication design, with strengths in one or more of the following:

  • typography and text design
  • typeface design
  • publication design

You are able to teach independently as well as collaborate with other faculty. The BA in VCD is taught in Finnish and the MA in English, so you are expected to have fluent spoken and written Finnish and English for teaching and supervision.

Experience in supervising and/or advising theses is an advantage. We also value critical and conceptual approaches to visual communication design education, and insight into contemporary teaching methods and future-oriented learning experiences in the field.

What we offer

The salary is determined based on experience and qualifications according to the salary system of Aalto University. Aalto University provides its employees with health care benefits, an inspiring working environment, and versatile staff training.
