We are seeking a project assistant to support research activities within the project "Social consequences of digitalisation of agriculture: Carbon farming actor networks and impacts on smallholder farmers in the Global South". The project examines which actors that farmers become connected to through participation in "carbon farming" programs, and how data flows between these actors. Actors may include small-scale start-ups, large-scale multinational chemical companies, tech companies, banks and carbon credit platforms. Data from farmers can include personal information, farm characteristics, agricultural practices, and software payment details. Data provided back to farmers may include carbon credits payments, agronomic advice, or product premiums.

 

The project assistant will contribute to the investigation and mapping of global carbon farming networks in the first phase of this project. This work will include data collection, compilation, mapping, and network analysis of actors involved in carbon farming programs in the Global South, as well as analysis of data flows to and from farmers. The project assistant may also support the identification and assessment of potential case studies for future in-depth fieldwork. Applicants should be experienced in handling both quantitative and qualitative data and be capable of systematically gathering and organising large amounts of data that are difficult to access. The candidate will work in close collaboration with the project manager Emma Johansson, Associate Professor of Sustainability Science.

 

 

Qualifications

Requirements for the position are:

  • Bachelor’s or master’s level education from natural or social sciences within relevant fields, e.g. sustainability science, geography, environmental science, computer science.
  • Good skills in using quantitative analysis tools within one or more of the following methods: Network analysis methods, visualization methods, online data collection (e.g. web scraping).
  • Experience with qualitative research methods, like document review and discourse analysis, case studies.
  • Excellent skills in spoken and written English.
  • Ability to work in a team and be goal- and result-oriented.
  • Ability to work independently, structured and carefully.
  • Interest and ability to learn and apply new methods and working methods is also a requirement.


 

Meritorious for the position are:

  • Experience with in collecting and analysing large amounts of data by using network analysis methods, tools, and software
  • Demonstrated ability to combine methods to gather and synthesize data (e.g. desktop research, interviews, participation in webinars)
  • Knowledge about food systems, agriculture, voluntary carbon credit markets, and carbon farming programs
  • Previous knowledge of power analysis in food systems, and agricultural development is meritorious.
