Project description

Third-cycle subject: Production Engineering

We invite applications for a PhD position in Production Engineering focusing on advanced machining systems. Modern manufacturing depends on high-performance machine tools and control systems that ensure precision, stability and product quality. These mechatronic systems integrate sensors, intelligent control and real-time metrology to monitor dynamics, thermal behaviour and positioning.

The doctoral project aims to advance knowledge of how machine tools and their control systems can be further developed to improve efficiency, accuracy and productivity. The work includes analysing mechanical, thermal and dynamic machine properties and developing and calibrating digital models that combine physics-based and data-driven methods to enhance process predictability and machine performance.

We seek a motivated doctoral student with a background in mechatronics, mechanical engineering or related fields, and an interest in both experimental and theoretical work. Experience in control systems, metrology or machine tools is advantageous. The project is conducted in close collaboration with international research partners and industry, providing excellent opportunities for advanced experimental work.

The doctoral student will join the Manufacturing and Metrology Systems unit and the Precision Engineering and Metrology (PEM) group at the Department of Production Engineering. The group of around 15 researchers develops precision-engineering and metrology methods in close collaboration with industry through Centre X - Advanced Manufacturing Solutions for Next-Generation Powertrains at KTH.

Supervision: Prof. Andreas Archenti is proposed to supervise the doctoral student. Decisions are made on admission
