The Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law is one of the oldest professional faculties at the Universityof Toronto. Today, it is one of the world’s great law schools. Description:

As a member of the Faculty’s senior management team, the Assistant Dean, JD Program, is a senior advisor to the Dean on a broad range of complex issues and contributes to the strategic planning and development of operational goals and policies for the Faculty.

 

Reporting to the Dean, the incumbent manages and oversees all non-curricular aspects of the JD Program including student services and public interest programs and clinics. Specific areas of oversight include admissions and recruitment, awards and financial aid, student programs, mental health and wellness initiatives, Indigenous initiatives, and career development.

 

The incumbent is responsible for all student wellness and success programs including tutoring and mentoring programs, and all non-academic student activities including clubs, international exchange program, and student government. The incumbent oversees student counseling and referrals regarding personal, academic, and financial issues. The incumbent is a member of the law school’s Accommodations and Considerations Committee and is a key liaison with Accessibility Services.

The incumbent participates in various Faculty committees and represents the Faculty on various University committees and/or working groups related to student administration. Chairs committees comprised of faculty members, staff, and students to address issues, develop policy, and implement programs.

The incumbent works closely with legal counsel to respond to litigation against the law school, including working with counsel on developing legal strategies, reviewing, and editing legal documents (e.g. submissions to the Human Rights Tribunal), and attending mediations and trials.

The Assistant Dean, JD Program, oversees and is responsible for the fiscal management of approximately $8.3 million in budgets, grants, and funding from a wide variety of sources.

 

The incumbent is also responsible for managing a large and diverse team of managerial and unionized staff. The incumbent develops, organizes, and leads training events and strategic planning activities for staff, with a focus on equity, diversity, and inclusion.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

 

EDUCATION:

  • Undergraduate university degree and a law degree (LL.B. or J.D.)


 

EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum five years directly related senior management experience preferably in a university, public interest, education, or legal setting
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of the legal academic community, the legal community, and the legal profession
  • Demonstrated administrative experience
  • Strong managerial skills and supervision of large staff complements
  • Experience in curriculum development, student counselling, and program management.

  • Strong leadership capabilities and ability to work effectively and collegially with individuals at all levels within the organization.
  • Excellent judgment and decision-making skills
  • Ability to function at the peer level with senior members of the legal profession, the academic community, and university administrators
  • Superior interpersonal skills required for facilitative and constructive relations with students, faculty, staff, the legal profession, and the broader academic community
  • Exceptional communication skills required to represent the Faculty to the broader academic and legal world and to enhance/maintain its pre-eminence within the academic community and the legal profession
    Excellent analytical, problem-solving, planning, and organizational skills required to deal effectively and sensitively with the complex and varied demands of the position
  • Management skills including budgeting, reporting, stakeholder relations, fundraising, governance, and strategic planning and ability to manage competing demands and multiple tasks in a timely, efficient, and effective manner
  • Excellent computer and database management skills
