ANU Vice-Chancellor Professor Ian Chubb has congratulated the 19 recipients of the 2010 Australian Museum Eureka Prizes - especially the two ANU winners - which were announced overnight. Professor David Lindenmayer from the Fenner School of Environment and Society won the Environmental Research Award and Dr Rowena Martin from the Research School of Biology won the Early Career Research Award at a ceremony held in Sydney. Professor Lindenmayer's award recognises his investigations into carbon storage in old-growth forests. Over almost three decades the world-renowned forest ecologist and conservation biologist has made significant and original contributions to forest biodiversity conservation and management. Dr Martin's award recognises her work uncovering resistance in malaria parasites to the anti-malarial drug cholroquine. Her research has now opened up new possibilities for future malaria treatment.  'Both awards recognise significant contributions in specific fields as well the broader benefits the discoveries will have for society in general,' said Professor Chubb. ?It is particularly pleasing to note that this is the second time Professor Lindenmayer has won the Environmental Research Award in a career spanning almost three decades.
