CENORE birthday
A joint venture between the University of Plymouth and Flag Officer Sea Training – Hydrography, Meteorology and Oceanography (FOST HM) is celebrating its first birthday. The Centre of Excellence in Naval Oceanographic Research and Education (CENORE) was established in July 2009 to provide focus to Royal Navy (RN) personnel undertaking higher academic studies in the field of oceanography, and to act as a platform for the development of research and enterprise activities of interest to the RN and the University of Plymouth. CENORE has spent its first year developing potential fields of both research and education and establishing links with other organisations including the UK Hydrographic Office (UKHO), the UK Met Office (UKMO), Defence Science and Technology Laboratories (DSTL) and Navy Command Head Quarters (NCHQ) as well as developing further areas of co-operation with external organisations such as the Osprey Consortium. In the process, CENORE has also gained recognition as a centre of excellence within the University’s Marine Institute. Under the auspices of CENORE, two papers were delivered at the recent HYDRO 09 conference in Cape Town, and two research papers have been published in academic journals. CENORE was publicised at the General Assembly of the European Geosciences Union in Vienna, and there was also a presentation at the Plymouth Marine Science Partnership conference by the chairman of the steering committee, Cdr Andy Swain RN. In order to publicise the Centre, a website has also been established within the Marine Institute.
