New drugs and combination treatments are urgently needed to treat parasitic worm infections.
1.5 billion people worldwide are infected with soil-transmitted helminths, a parasitic worm infection. In the past, only two drugs have been used, increasing the risk of drug resistance. New drugs and combination therapies are thus urgently needed to fight soil-transmitted helminth infections. Swiss TPH was able to show high efficacy of tribendimidine in combination with two other anthelminthic drugs. The results were published today in the Lancet Infectious Diseases. Parasitic worm infections are a major public health issue in low and middle-income countries. Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections affect 1.5 billion people globally.
