Computers Improve the Quality of Life in Care Homes

Computers Improve the Quality of Life in Care Homes. An advanced computer system installed into care homes has been successfully - reconnecting residents, who often feel cut off and isolated, with the outside - world. Developed by the University of Sheffield, MAAVIS has been allowing elderly - residents to use Skype to hold video conferences with friends and relatives via - a simple touch screen interface. Although computers are common place in domestic homes across the country, the - vast majority of care home residents have never used them. The University´s - research showed only one in every 50 residents in Sheffield care homes had ever - used a standard qwerty keyboard. However, through MAAVIS the residents have been accessing social network sites, - viewing online videos and listening to music. The system´s design overcomes the - common resistance many elderly residents feel towards computers by radically - simplifying the way a user can view and manoeuvre around software.
