Embed public values in AI development

Digital systems are becoming ever smarter and able to self-learn. This can be great for end users, who will receive much better services. But to what extent are public values safeguarded in this development? Do we know enough about the pros and cons of AI? 'It's time for social and behavioural scientists to take a front seat in AI development,' states Prof. Claes de Vreese. Claes is distinguished research professor of Data, Democracy and Society at the University of Amsterdam's Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. As of 1 September, he is the leader of the research priority area 'Human(e) AI'. We spoke to him about the social side of AI.
