Geography of South Asia - Genesis of Conflicts and the Possibility of Peace

Vortrag von Raquib Ahmed, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh, Mo 11. Uhr, HS 414. Dr. Raquib Ahmed - Professor of Geography and Environmental Studies, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh The discussion in the presentation depicts how South Asia grew as a geographical region and the political transformation created a scope of social and political instability. However the economic prosperity and social stability decreased due to growing external influences of social and economic powers from other parts of Asia and Europe. The alien powers used intra-regional weakness as an advantage, settled down as colonial powers and routed the new concept of division, suppression and exploitation. This continues even today in various new forms and the region is having newer types of conflicts. In the advent of newly complex situations the dimensions of intra-regional and internationally linked conflicts have jeopardized the question of future peace in the region.
