Research into sustainable rural and regional communities has been the product of a partnership between the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) and The Australian National University. The Australian Farming Futures Scholarship is made to promising young researchers undertaking an honours level project which looks at the links between community resilience and profitable, sustainable and competitive industries. Dr Anthony Hogan, Director of the National Institute of Rural and Regional Australia at ANU said that the intention of these awards is to develop the skills, knowledge and confidence of young scholars to engage with the complex social issues facing rural and regional Australia. 'This has been a very successful collaboration between DAFF and ANU with aims to tackle a lack of social science skills on the relationship between productive agricultural industry and sustainable communities,' he said. Three students have presented their findings to the Hon Dr Mike Kelly AM, MP, Parliamentary Secretary of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry. ; Alexander Readford - 'Social Impact Assessment, Adaptive Capacity and Mine Closure: A case study of Kandos, NSW? - ; Pele Cannon - 'Why choose to change' Unpacking the influence of socio-cultural factors on farmer decision-making? - ; Michelle Knight - 'Threats to food production in Australia: An exploration of food producers' perspectives' Click here for a description of the NIRRA research projects
