TechMed Event 2025 - Beyond the breakthrough

Technological breakthroughs are only valuable if they make a tangible difference in healthcare practice. This is the central theme of the TechMed Event, organised by the TechMed Centre of the University of Twente on Thursday, 6 November. The annual event brings together researchers, healthcare professionals, companies, policymakers and educators to explore how medical innovations can improve patient care.

Beyond the Breakthrough - Creating Impact Together

Under the annual theme "Beyond the Breakthrough", the event focuses on the crucial step from innovation to implementation. ’A promising technology on the shelf does not necessarily translate into better care,’ explains the organisation. ’It is the collaboration between all links in the chain, from fundamental research to the final application, that ensures innovations actually reach patients and make healthcare smarter, more personalised and more effective.’

The day begins with keynote speaker Danina Kapetanovic (University of Waterloo), who will present her vision of the "Hospital of the Future" and showcase CareNext, a coalition that integrates digital innovation, clinical practice and policy to create future-proof healthcare.

The inspirational programme then unfolds in three thematic tracks, each providing practical insights and room for interaction:

  • From Clinical Challenge to Change : dive into Women’s Health, Cardiovascular Health, and Musculoskeletal Health, with multidisciplinary discussions and patient panels.
  • From Technological Idea to Reality : explore how AI, Medical Imaging and Bioengineering solutions are implemented and scaled, supported by expert panel discussions.
  • From Shared Innovation to Transnational Impact: learn how local innovations can be translated internationally through scenario exercises and interactive sessions, including Defence & Health Synergies, Crossing Global Borders, and Accelerating Healthcare Innovation.

The TechMed Event will conclude with the keynote by Femke Nijboer (University of Twente), who brings humour, insight, and a refreshing dose of irreverence to the topic of health and wellbeing. In her presentation, "How to Wreck Your Health and Be Happy", Femke explores the idea that illness can happen to anyone, but you can also actively influence your own health. In a society concerned about ageing and the pressures on healthcare systems, she encourages a shift in focus: don’t strive for a long life, aim for a good one.

Global connections

A highlight of the 2025 edition is its strong international character. MedTech clusters and ecosystems from around the globe, including representatives from Canada, India, Scandinavia, Germany, Belgium, and many other countries, will be in attendance. This provides participants with a unique opportunity to exchange knowledge, explore cross-border collaborations, and learn from worldwide best practices in healthcare innovation.

MedTech Innovation Forum

There will also be plenty of opportunities for interaction at the MedTech Innovation Forum, where visitors can discover innovations and demos, attend pitches, join guided tours through the TechMed Centre, and discuss their work with experts. This interactive environment encourages networking, knowledge exchange and collaboration throughout the day. Those looking to showcase their innovations can now register for the Experience Centre.

The TechMed Event is recognised as the central meeting point for the medical technology sector in the Netherlands and beyond. The event attracts a wide audience, including medical specialists, researchers, technicians, companies, executives, financiers and policymakers. Accreditation is being requested from ABAN and NVvTG. The aim is not only to inspire but to activate and initiate valuable collaborations that have a direct impact on the healthcare of tomorrow.
