Tony Monaco to head Tufts University
University 30 Nov 10 Professor Anthony Monaco, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Planning and Resources Allocation), has been appointed the next President of Tufts University, Massachusetts, USA. He will take up the role in 2011, leaving Oxford in July 2011. Tufts was established in 1852 and has around 10,000 students, four campuses (including one in France), and 10 academic Schools. It is one of the most selective universities in the USA at undergraduate level, while its graduate and professional schools include among others the Fletcher School, the country's oldest graduate-only school of international relations; the Sackler School of Graduate Biomedical Sciences and School of Medicine, which educates more doctors who ultimately enter primary care than any other; and the School of Dental Medicine, the USA's second-largest dental school. Oxford's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Andrew Hamilton, said: 'I have the greatest admiration for Tony, both as a fellow scientist and a fellow University administrator. His research is world-leading, and in his role as Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Planning and Resources he had led the way on some of the most challenging issues faced by this or any other UK university. We will be very sorry to see him leave, but it is always a great pleasure when someone from Oxford goes on to lead another excellent university, and we congratulate Tufts on securing him as president.
