University to quiz school pupils on their knowledge of geography

Pupils from across the South West will be coming to the University of Plymouth to compete in a geography quiz with the chance to win a place in the national Worldwise Challenge. The youngsters will also have the opportunity to meet polar explorer Antony Jinman and find out how geography helped him in his quest for adventure. The day is being organised as a joint initiative between the University and Stoke Damerel Community College and aims to increase pupils’ interest in Geography at GCSE level and beyond. The results will go towards the Worldwise Challenge, which culminates in a national event in April next year. Quiz questions from previous years have ranged from identifying mountains to the location where Andy Murray won his first Master’s title in tennis. This year, teams will also be asked questions of a more local flavour that have been set by the Geographical Association and University staff. Jemma Middleton, from the Stoke Damerel Community College, said: “The quiz is a fantastic opportunity for students from all over the region to get together to share their passion for Geography.
