Welcome Village: succesful warm welcome for the international students

Welcome Village

Welcome Village

During September, Ghent University received about 500 students in the Welcome Village at Home Vermeylen. There awaited them information and a corona test.

The international students for this academic year were welcomed between 1 and 18 September in an open-air "Welcome Village" at Home Vermeylen. All international students pass by there, in principle immediately upon arrival in Ghent. There they receive all the necessary information about the operation of Ghent University and their stay in the City of Ghent, they receive their student card, take out health insurance, etc. For a large number of them, their accommodation in the residences of Ghent University is also being finalized. and they immediately get their key there. They were also introduced to ESN and the Home Konvent there.

"The rapid switching and action of UGent colleagues across various directorates and the support of partners such as the City of Ghent and UZGent have ensured that, despite the Corona pandemic, we still personally received the international students: warmly and safely!" (International Support Team)

In view of the Covid-19 pandemic, students also came from high-risk areas, for which quarantine and testing is required or recommended by the government. Our international students could not use the test facility on the site of the Jan Palfijn Hospital, due to the lack of a national register number or BIS number. That is why Ghent University decided to develop an alternative through its own testing system with the help of UZ Gent. They supplied the test kits and protective material, and doctors who graduated from Ghent University administered the tests.

The free corona test took place in the Welcome Village to avoid students having to move around the city too much before undergoing this process. The tests were analyzed daily in the UZ lab. The results were sent to occupational physicians at Ghent University. There, negative and positive results were separated. The positively tested students were followed up by the student doctors. The negative by the occupational physicians. The students have also been given detailed information about quarantine.

Some figures:

  • Number passed: 502
  • Number of people tested at Welcome Village: 362
