Photo: UHH/Schütt Newly planted tree in the center of Hamburg - Hamburg has roughly 250,000 trees. Every year, many are chopped down and new ones are planted. At 17 new sites, a team from Universität Hamburg has looked at the availability of ground water. Their conclusion: All trees suffered from a lack of water that could shorten their lives. Alexander Schütt, a soil scientist at Universität Hamburg's Center for Earth System Research and Sustainability (CEN), and his team have examined the dynamic of ground water stores following the planting of 17 young trees throughout Hamburg. They also helped to bury multiple sensors in the various areas around the roots. From 2016 to 2019, the doctoral researcher has been collecting data on water availability, comparing these with meteorological and site-specific data.
