Artificial intelligence researcher Stephen Gould has been named a Microsoft Research Faculty Fellow. Gould, a fellow with the ANU College of Engineering and Computer Science, will receive a total of $100,000 over two years to further his research. "I am honoured to be among the handful of early-career researchers to have received such a prestigious award. I am delighted that Microsoft has recognised the value of my research and the direction that I am taking in tackling challenging problems in computer vision and machine learning," Gould said. "Importantly, the Microsoft Research Faculty Fellowship provides me with opportunities to interact with other top international researchers and exchange ideas about solving these problems. The financial component of the grant is obviously of enormous help in funding many research-related activities, including visits to other institutions and access to computational infrastructure." Gould said building machines that understand images is a long-standing challenge of artificial intelligence. "My research is at the intersection between computer vision and machine learning.
