May 07, 2010 — Coral Gables — University of Miami College of Engineering Computer Science students Juan Bustos (Junior from Bogota, Columbia), Oscar Sanchez (Freshman from Miami, FL) and Frank Rodriguez (Junior from Miami, FL), placed in the SoutheastCon 2010 programming contest on March 20, 2010 in Charlotte, NC. They took second in the 2010 IEEE Software Competition, beating out thirteen schools. The eight hour competition consisted of solving six complicated problems. They were the only team able to solve the last problem. The top three teams were then interviewed by a committee comprised of the contest organizers, which was the final stage of the scoring process. To prepare for this challenge, the students met daily during spring break to study. Their strategy was to distribute tasks amongst themselves, having each one learn different items.
